Tap Tempo Accuracy and Limitations
The tap tempo tool calculates BPM from the average of the intervals between your taps. The accuracy of the result depends directly on the consistency of your tapping and the number of taps used.
- With fewer than 4 taps, the result is unreliable and should not be used for critical tempo measurement
- With 4–7 taps, typical accuracy is ±2–3 BPM under consistent tapping conditions
- With 8 or more taps, typical accuracy is ±1 BPM under consistent tapping conditions
- Human timing variability — the natural tendency to tap slightly faster or slower over time — affects all tap tempo results
The tap tempo tool measures the intervals between your taps. It does not know whether you are tapping on quarter notes, eighth notes, or any other rhythmic subdivision. It cannot determine time signature, groove, swing, or expressive timing. A result of 120 BPM means the average interval between your taps was 500 ms — nothing more.
Audio BPM Detection Accuracy and Limitations
The audio BPM detection modes — both microphone and file upload — produce a tempo estimate using onset detection and autocorrelation. These are genuinely useful for most commercial music with a consistent beat, but they have real limitations that every user should understand.
The half-time/double-time ambiguity is inherent and cannot be eliminated. All autocorrelation-based beat detectors produce peaks at the true beat period and at integer multiples and divisions of it. The algorithm scores tempo candidates and returns the highest-scoring one — but that scoring is heuristic, not definitive. A result that is exactly double or half the expected tempo is a half-time or double-time disambiguation error, not a tool malfunction. Verify by ear before using any audio BPM result in professional production or live performance. The Troubleshooting page documents how to resolve this.
Tempo-variable performances produce averaged estimates. Live recordings, performances with intentional tempo changes, and music with expressive rubato do not have a single BPM. The tool returns an averaged estimate across the analysed section. The further a performance deviates from a consistent pulse, the less meaningful that average is.
Sparse rhythmic content reduces accuracy. Ambient music, slow classical pieces, certain jazz recordings, and music without a clearly defined beat onset pattern do not provide sufficient onset regularity for autocorrelation to identify a reliable beat period. For this type of material, tap tempo is more reliable.
BPM does not capture time signature, groove, or musical feel. A BPM figure describes only the rate of the beat pulse. Whether beats are grouped in 3/4, 4/4, or 7/8; whether the groove is straight or swung; whether the feel is driving or relaxed — none of these are captured by beat period measurement.
