Which mode should I use? Use tap tempo when you can hear the music and tap along to it — it is the most reliable method for music with a clear, consistent beat that you can follow in real time. Use audio BPM detection when you need to measure the tempo of a recording without tapping, when you cannot hear the track clearly enough to tap accurately, or when you need to process a file offline. File upload gives slightly more reliable results than microphone for most recordings because it analyses the complete waveform rather than a live capture.
How many taps do I need for an accurate tap tempo result? Results stabilise meaningfully after 4–6 taps. For maximum accuracy — ±1 BPM — use 8 or more consistent taps. Fewer than 4 taps produces an unreliable estimate. The tap count is displayed during the session so you can see how many intervals have contributed to the current result.
Does the tool work on mobile devices? The tap tempo tool works on all modern mobile browsers — keyboard tap, screen tap, or button tap all register correctly. Understanding Your Result
My result shows 80 BPM but the track feels like 160 BPM. Which is correct? Both may be correct — this is the half-time/double-time ambiguity that affects all automated audio BPM detection. A track at 80 BPM and a track at 160 BPM produce mathematically related autocorrelation peaks. The algorithm scores tempo candidates and returns the highest-scoring one, but it cannot definitively resolve the ambiguity from audio alone. If the displayed value is exactly half what you feel, 160 BPM is the likely true tempo. If it is exactly double, 80 BPM is likely correct. Verify by ear — count beats against the display or tap tempo the track to confirm.
My tap tempo result keeps changing between 118 and 122 BPM. Why? Run-to-run variation of 2–4 BPM in tap tempo results is normal and reflects human timing variability — it is very difficult to tap at a perfectly consistent interval. The more taps you use, the more the averaging smooths this variation. At 8 or more taps with consistent timing, the result should stabilise within ±1 BPM. If variation persists beyond ±3 BPM at 8+ taps, your tapping is likely drifting — try tapping sub-beats (eighth notes rather than quarter notes) and halving the result.
The audio BPM detector returned a result that seems completely wrong — not half or double, just wrong. Results that are neither the true BPM nor a simple multiple or division of it are most commonly caused by sparse rhythmic content — tracks where beat onsets are infrequent or inconsistent, such as ambient music, slow classical pieces, or heavily swung jazz. The onset detection algorithm requires a reasonably consistent rhythmic pulse to identify a beat period. For music without a clear, regular pulse, tap tempo is a more reliable method.
What is the difference between BPM and time signature? BPM measures how fast the beat pulse moves — the number of beats per minute. Swing and groove are defined by the microtiming of notes relative to the beat grid — early, late, or shifted by specific ratios. These are not captured by beat period measurement. Two tracks at exactly 120 BPM can feel dramatically different depending on their swing ratios and microtiming characteristics.
