Terms and Conditions

Purpose of This Website

MusicTempoFinder.com is a free, browser-based tool and educational resource for measuring musical tempo using tap input, microphone audio analysis, and file upload BPM detection. The site is operated by Hurst, rhythm analysis researcher and music production educator.

By accessing or using any page or tool on MusicTempoFinder.com, you agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions. If you do not agree to these terms, please do not use this site.

These terms apply to all visitors and users of MusicTempoFinder.com, regardless of how you access the site or which device you use.

Use of the Tools

Tap tempo The tap tempo tool records keystroke, click, or touch timestamps to calculate BPM from interval averaging. No audio capture occurs and no microphone permission is required.

Microphone audio BPM detection The microphone BPM detection mode requires microphone access to capture live audio for tempo analysis. By granting microphone permission when prompted by your browser, you authorise the site to capture a live audio stream for the sole purpose of BPM analysis. This audio stream is processed entirely within your browser, is never transmitted to any server, and is never stored in any form.

File upload BPM detection The file upload mode reads audio files locally using the browser’s FileReader API for local BPM analysis. Files are never uploaded to any server. The file is processed entirely within your browser’s memory and is cleared when the tab is closed or reloaded. Full details of how all three modes handle data are documented on the Data Security page.

Permitted use You may use all tools and content on MusicTempoFinder.com for personal, educational, and professional reference purposes. You may share links to pages on this site freely.

  • Attempt to interfere with, disable, or circumvent any security feature of this site
  • Misrepresent the source of this site’s content or present it as your own work
  • Use this site in any way that violates applicable local, national, or international law

Tool Accuracy and Limitations

The tempo detection tools on MusicTempoFinder.com produce BPM estimates whose accuracy depends on the mode used and the conditions of measurement.

Tap tempo accuracy: ±1 BPM with 8 or more consistent taps; ±2–3 BPM with 4–7 taps; unreliable with fewer than 4 taps. Audio BPM detection accuracy: ±1–3 BPM for recordings with a consistent, clearly defined beat. Half-time and double-time disambiguation errors can produce results that are exactly double or half the true tempo.

These tools are provided as educational and diagnostic reference resources. They are not certified measurement instruments. Results should not be used as the sole basis for any professional, contractual, or legal decision without independent verification.

Full technical documentation of all three pipelines, accuracy figures, and known limitations — including the half-time/double-time ambiguity — is available on the How It Works page. Guidance on interpreting unexpected results is on the Troubleshooting page.
